Sustainable palm oil ?

I usually make my own peanut butter because it’s soooo easy and it’s nice to know all it has is peanuts in, no added oil or salt. I ran out recently and asked mum to buy a natural one in the shop. She came back with a nice looking one- Whole Earth Crunchy Organic Peanut Butter  but after I had eaten my breakfast I read the ingredients of the peanut butter which were 95% peanuts, organic sustainable Palm oil and sea salt. Which made me think how can Palm oil be sustainable ?!

After looking it up briefly it basically says that ‘sustainable’ Palm oil is, on the whole, grown in rainforests that have already been cleared previously AND by the same companies and suppliers who are still carrying on destroying other rainforests and peatlands for palm plantations. So it makes no sense how these products can claim to be ‘sustainable’! I don’t really understand much up Palm oil so I’m going to look it up some more later; all I know is that it leads to deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty AND slavery. Not enough people know about it (including myself) and we need to do something about it!

The word natural is so deceiving- makes it seem like it would be just peanuts!

I agree. I buy Meridian which has nothing but 100% organic peanuts in it, no sugar, no palm oil. Bought some organic red peanuts recently to have a go at making some, have only made almond and cashew nut butter previously as bought is soooo good! 😊

I have had the Meridian one before, they do the huge pots of it which I can get through in a few weeks! Making peanut butter is soo easy and delicious, I’m still yet to try to make my own almond butter
